Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words - Rei which means "Universal Intelligence" and Ki which is "life force energy". It is administered by "lying on of hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki has become increasingly popular in the USA in recent years. Reiki treatments are currently being offered in 60 hospital settings. Many nurses have been trained in Reiki to help promote their patients healing process.

Why receive Reiki?

People come for Reiki treatments to promote healing, relaxation, and stress reduction. I have worked with clients who have used Reiki pre and post operatively to speed up recovery time. I have also found it useful for clients dealing with depression and anxiety. Hospice clients have also shown to become more peaceful and relaxed after having received a Reiki treatment. Reiki works well in conjunction with allopathic medicine (Western) and has been shown to help minimize the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Many hospitals have used this ancient tool in their complementary medical programs. These hospitals include the Dana-Farber Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, George Washington Hospital, New York Presbyterian Hospital.

What to expect during a Reiki treatment.

During a Reiki treatment you will lie down, fully clothed on a comfortable table. I will place my hands on top of, or underneath your body. The touch is very gentle and light. You may feel tingling, a buzzing sensation or warmth. During a Reiki treatment emotions may also come to the surface and be expressed. As the treatment continues you may feel a wonderful glowing radiance flowing through and around you. At times, you may be so relaxed that you fall asleep. Usually people are encouraged to keep talking to a minimum so they can let go and deeply relax. At the end of a session I have had clients report feeling peaceful, lighter, deeply relaxed and a heightened sense of well-being.
